Job Description :

HukariAscendent is a Service-Disabled, Veteran-Owned, Small Business specializing in comprehensive engineering and technical support services associated with commercial nuclear power and other Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear activities.

We are seeking a Structural Engineer to support the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).

Background:

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) is currently preparing for an extended outage in late 2028 to replace the reactor beryllium reflector. Complete disassembly of all instruments in the thermal beam room and the guide network are required to perform the reactor beryllium replacement. To take advantage of the opportunity provided by the HBRR project, a series of neutron instrument projects to expand and improve the neutron science program at HFIR will be executed coinciding with the reactor outage. These improvements include:

  • Expansion of the existing Cold Guide Hall (CGH, building 7972) to provide more neutron instrument/laboratory space and more favorable instrument suite layout.

  • Redesign and replacement of the CGH neutron guide systems, common vacuum systems, and common radiation shielding to provide two additional neutron beamlines (increase from four to six), a more favorable instrument suite layout, and improved radiation shielding.

  • Various individual instrument improvements for the instruments in the CGH and thermal beam room.

The above scope is in the early engineering phase. ORNL is seeking a Mechanical Engineer on a subcontract basis to perform and support the engineering related to the HBRR instrument improvements.

General scope:

The position will report and receive direction from the HBRR Level 2 manager for the thermal beam room and CGH instrument scope. The position will also interface with the Director of the HFIR Upgrade Project, the HBRR project manager, HFIR reactor engineering staff, Instrument Engineering staff, and other ORNL subject matter experts (SME).

Examples of job responsibilities include:

  • Contribute towards defining engineering requirements for instrument projects to ensure compliance with mechanical codes and standards and ORNL and DoE requirements.

  • Perform structural calculations, such as floor loading and seismic calculations.

  • Develop concepts and detailed designs for radiation shielding.

  • Work with rigging SMEs to develop lift plans for existing and new equipment.

  • Develop concepts and detailed designs for equipment mounting, equipment trenches, and structural and equipment wall and floor anchors.

  • Work with rigging SMEs to develop lift plans for existing and new equipment.

  • Develop concepts and detailed designs for equipment access platforms, stairways, and mezzanines.

Work arrangement: Mon.-Fri., onsite at the HFIR facility. Occasional remote work on a limited basis may be possible but is not guaranteed.  Local candidates are preferred.

Duration: 18 months.
