Job Description :

HukariAscendent is a Woman-Owned, Small Business specializing in comprehensive engineering and technical support services associated with commercial nuclear power and other Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear activities.

We are seeking three Mechanical Designers to support the Second Target Station (STS). The STS Project is in the preliminary design phase and is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to perform and support STS neutron scattering instrument designs.

Background: The Second Target Station (STS) is a $2Billion Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) over the next decade. provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences as well as industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL: the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure U.S. leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come. STS will be capable of supporting 18 individual neutron scattering instruments (beamlines), each of which transports neutrons from the source to a shielded end station that houses a user-provided sample along with a suite of detectors. Please see http://neutrons.ornl.gov/sts for more information.

General scope:

We are seeking a mechanical designer to produce high quality engineering design packages for components and subsystems of multiple neutron scattering instruments. These instruments are scientific experiment stations with unique requirements and incorporate custom configurations of various mechanical and electronic components, many of which are one-of-a-kind articles including support structures, positioning systems, vacuum vessels, neutron optic structures, radiation shielding, and others. In this role, you will work alongside other instrument engineers and designers to fully develop these component and subsystem designs. This position would be ideal for those who would like to work in a machine design development environment. Specific job duties include:

  • Take complex engineering designs from conception through detailed design

  • Create engineering models and drawings using Creo/Windchill

  • Prepare clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough, or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions

  • Perform tolerance stack ups to assure proper fit in assemblies

  • Successfully communicate and collaborate with engineers and scientists throughout the design process
